Since 2001, Carlo Aonzo has come to New York City every year to spread his vision of Italian style mandolin. With grace, charm, and patience, he teaches and illustrates his style and technique. Attendees at his workshops learn in a warm and supportive, but challenging environment.
Music is distributed months in advance so students can prepare the material. Then, at the workshop, Carlo teaches the finer points of nuance, style, dynamics, and ensemble playing.
The workshop runs for three full days. On the first day, Carlo teaches a class on Technique and Exercises. The rest of the workshop is devoted to Mandolin Orchestra. Music played at the workshop includes works from all the major periods of mandolin music. We also play repertoire for bowed instruments as well as contemporary compositions for mandolin. Attendees of past workshops have enjoyed playing music by Bach, Barbella, Bottacchiari, Calace, Denis, Falbo, Gervasio, Giuliani, Kioulaphides, Mozart, Munier, Principe, Romaldi, Telemann, and of course Vivaldi.
Attendees have unanimously praised Carlo and the workshop.
The workshop is intended for intermediate and advanced mandolinists. Beginners may be accepted but should inquire as to suitablility before registering.
We hope you will join us in New York for the next workshop. The 2013 workshop will be held the weekend of April 4-7 in Manhattan. Advance reservations are required. For more information, please email Chaim Caron.
2013 INFORMATION (NEW!)
Registration is now open for the 13th Annual Carlo Aonzo Manhattan Mandolin Workshop to be held Friday through Sunday, April 5-7, 2013. Thursday, April 4, is an optional half day. APPLY HERE!
This year, we are again emphasizing Mandolin Orchestra. The workshop will consist of the following classes:
- Friday April 5 - Sunday April 7: Mandolin Orchestra (6 1/2 hours each day)
- Thursday April 4: Optional session - Shifting: mechanics and strategies. Mechanics of shifting, when to shift, how to decide when to shift. When there are multiple options, how do you select the best one? Different mandolinists have different needs so the choice that's right for you might not be right for someone else. In this three hour session, we will examine shifting options in an etude by Calace and (no surprise here) a beautiful piece by Bach - the second movement of the flute sonata in C. It is really gorgeous. This music will be distributed in advance.
Please note: this session is relevant to mandolists and mandocellists, but the pieces we will play in this session are for mandolins only. If you are playing mandola or mandocello at the workshop and would like to attend this session, please contact Chaim.
MANDOLIN ORCHESTRA:
We have a wonderful program planned for Mandolin Orchestra. We will be playing music by J.S. Bach (the 5th fugue from Art of the Fugue), C.P.E. Bach (Oboe Concerto Wq164), Corelli (the beautiful Christmas Concerto), Calace's Momento Lirico (Opus 45) and Tarantella by contemporary composer Jonathan Jensen. There are opportunities for solos in the pieces by Corelli and C.P.E. Bach.
As you can see, this year's workshop will be very intensive! We will study all the pieces and play them at an informal recital at the end of the workshop. The recital is open to the public. Please invite your friends. There is no admission charge.
We are distributing some of the sheet music now so if you plan to attend, please register soon so you'll have as much time as possible to prepare the music.
MANDOLA AND MANDOCELLO:
Mandocellists and mandolists are especially encouraged to attend.
Carlo will conduct for 5 hours per day. Our assistant conductor will lead the group for 1 1/2 hours each day. The total number of hours per day will be 6 1/2.
Pricing is as follows:
- Shifting Workshop Only: $60
- Mandolin Orchestra Only: $429
- Full Workshop: Shifting Workshop and Mandolin Orchestra: $472
OUR EXPECTATIONS:
We expect that you will prepare the music before the workshop to the best of your ability. This is not a sight-reading workshop. At the workshop, we will concentrate on the finer points of the music and on ensemble playing. We also expect that Mandolin Orchestra attendees will attend all the orchestra sessions. (All evening activities are optional.)
